Do you want to watch 8 movies that are like Captain America: Civil War? Well, you’ve come to the right place friend and keep in mind this is not in any particular order.
This is one of the best films of last year. It’s almost a silly concept when you say it out loud “this is a spin-off of the Rocky series and it’s about the son of Apollo Creed.” Despite this, it works very well. It’s about the struggle of Adonis (Michael B. Jordan) being his own person while trying to get out of his father’s shadow, Apollo. Both Sly Stallone and Michael B. Jordan put out phenomenal performances. It was a big slap in the face that it wasn’t nominated for best picture. If you haven’t seen it then what are you waiting for? Go and watch it!
Avengers: Age of Ultron
How does one make a fantastic sequel to an already great movie? Well, you dial the action it up to 11, introduce more characters, and James Spader as Ultron. Honestly, I still enjoy the first Avengers film a little more, but it doesn’t mean I don’t love this movie any less. The action scenes of this film beat out the first movie. Seeing Hawkeye interact more than he did in the first film was just too awesome for words. And once again, James Spader as Ultron was great, having that menacing tone but not going too far with it as if he was a cartoon villain. This was one of the best Marvel movies to come out last year.
This is a bit hard to sell for those who are looking for a straight up action film. “Spotlight”is a superb drama film. While it’s not doing anything flashy or giving you dynamic cinematography, it is giving you a gripping story and great acting by our finest actors working in Hollywood to date. I will say, I wasn’t the world’s biggest fan of what the Academy’s nominations for best picture were, but this was the one film that I was glad won. If you’re looking for something different this is a good choice, you won’t be disappointed.
Green Lantern: First Flight
Five years ago, they made a live action Green Lantern movie, and it was a major bomb both financially and critically. At best it was… Meh. But what if I told you there was an animated Green Lantern movie and, surprise, it was better than the live action movie. Green Lantern: First Flight came out on DVD two years before the Ryan Reynolds version. Simply put, it was everything that the live action version should have been. It’s a space opera superhero movie, with a hint of “Training Day” in the mix. There are some things that are lacking, but it’s still a much better film compared to the live action movie. You should check it out if you are into DC.
It’s probably the most intimidating thing to be the bookend of the Marvel Cinematic Universe of phase two, especially right after “Avengers: Age of Ultron.” And whether or not it was the right decision, the movie was still a fun ride. It’s the most comedic film of the MCU (Deadpool doesn’t count since it’s in a different continuity). It had some of the most creative fight scenes too. It was pretty gosh darn funny. And there was some really good casting choices. I do like that Paul Rudd is not your typical superhero, which overall fit the character. What else is there to say, go watch it if you haven’t already.
Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox
When I first heard that the same people that have been creating all the other DC animation movies were doing an adaptation of “Flashpoint”, I wasn’t really too thrilled. Then I watched the movie and I just kept my mouth shut the whole time because it was so good. The DC animation films have a line of good movies, sure not all of them are winners but you can’t say that any of them were bad. Their team knows a lot about comic books since most of them have done a couple of DC animated shows in the past, “Batman: The Animated Series” anyone? And this is one of their absolute best.
Batman: The Dark Knight Returns
Based on one of the most celebrated graphic novels of all time and the inspiration for Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice. “Batman: The Dark Knight Returns” is just jaw droppingly amazing. Of course, everyone remembers the Batman and Superman fight, but this was so much more than that and this animated movie captures what made that graphic novel so great. There is no doubt in my mind that you should go and watch this movie.
If you haven’t seen Deadpool yet, then may I ask what is wrong with you? It’s one of the best comedies and Superhero movies of all time. Heck, it’s a parody of superhero movies. It has Ryan Reynolds as the Merc with the Mouth, Deadpool, and he is so good and comical in it. I was laughing so much that my sides were hurting. I can’t think of a comedy in recent memory that has ever done that. Why haven’t you watched it? Go and see it for yourself.
