As a 26-year-old, I do my best to be as mature as I possibly can. Yet, it is so hard to control my own inner man-child when I see things that trigger it. Stuff like the nostalgia of my childhood such as comic books, video games, cartoons, and tv shows.
If there ever was one thing that I say, “I must watch,” and flail my hands like Kermit the frog from the Muppet show, it would be those giant robots. Voltron, Big O, Power Rangers, and, of course, the Gundam series. They made me want a big giant robot that I can pilot and fight other big robots with as well.
Thank goodness I can get my fix of big robots destroying other big robots in animes. Although, now I have started to become more and more like the inflatable tube man you see in the car dealership places.
Anyhow, when I start to get that itch of the need to watch robots smashing each other, I look for shows that I haven’t watched yet. Shows, such as Kuromukuro.
There has been a discovery of ancient artifacts during the construction of the Kurobe Dam. Scientists start to do research on what exactly these relics from the past are. Then, all of the sudden, a giant robot comes from the sky and a lone samurai awakens within the artifacts.
The samurai is the only one who can fight against the mysterious enemy, with what’s hidden inside the relics.
Mechs and a samurai, my fanfiction coming true. Now, you could go and try to find that mech anime that is similar to this one or I can simply give you the 5 Animes like Kuromukuro.
Giant robots that surf in the air with giant boards.
A 14-year-old boy named Renton Thurston has the desire to leave home and go on adventures. Although his grandfather insists on Renton being a mechanic like him. Renton may get the chance, after all, when a robot that is capable of riding in the air crashes through and is piloted by a girl exactly his age. Now, he’s on the run with a gang named Gekkostate, as they fight whoever is chasing after them for both the robot and the girl.
This is one of those anime that’s been talked about for a while and there’s a reason why. It has interesting characters, a great story, and the designs of the mech is very unique. Go watch Eureka Seven right now, you won’t regret it.
Suisei no Gargantia (Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet)
In the distant future, humanity has begun sailing through the stars, but now they are at war with strange creatures called the Hideauze. During of which, a 16-year-old boy named Ledo, who is armed with Chamber, an autonomous robot, crash lands on earth. At first thinking residents are hostile, he slowly gets used to the people around him and starts to fit with his new surroundings.
However, this new calm life he’s custom to is about to be cut short, as something dangerous approaches him.
It’s a unique take on the science fiction genre. It helps us understand the main character and the changes he goes through. Highly recommended for everyone out there.
Rinne no Lagrange (Lagrange: The Flower of Rin-ne)
Let combine some girl power with mechs.
Madoka Kyouno is a normal high school girl, who’s life is about to turn upside down. When a mysterious girl named Lan asked Madoka to pilot a robot, she agrees. Now, she’ll protect the people of Kamogawa from an evil alien that wants to attack earth.
This has a lighter-hearted tone than the usual mech anime series. It’s fun and exciting, which you definitely have to watch.
15 years ago, a war began between Earth and the Empire of Mars, however, they have ceased fire due to the hypergate, a portal to Mars, that is now destroyed. After many years, Mars has finally reached out to earth and has asked for peace for there to be peace between the two. But after an assassination attempt on the princess of mars, the Empire fights once more.
This time to the death.
This is a very intriguing war story that people should watch. Great animation, awesome characters, and one of the best-written anime series to date. What more you can ask for?
Neon Genesis Evangelion
