Darth Vader becomes available to you after you have completed a lot of the mission objectives after you hit level 60ish. Darth is very tanky even at 4 stars when you gear him well.
His basic ability works great against Jedis since they cannot evade that. His AoE ability inflicts 3 stacks of damage over time, which is great when used alongside other AoE damage skills.
Culling blade deals bonus damage but removes any status effects. It synergizes well with his AoE ability if you use them on turn 2. If you enjoy using dark side characters, his leader skill will improve your damage significantly.
Unfortunately, there is no way of farming his shards aside from achievements. It will be 9000 years before you can get him to 7 stars.
