SAO is futuristic. The anime series was adopted in 2012. It details a virtual reality online multi-player Role-Playing game (SAO) which was released in 2022. Players control their characters in the game via a Nerve Gear. Players login to SAO on November 6, 2022, and find out that they cannot log out. The creator, Akihiko Kayaba, informs them that to get freed, they need to reach the 100th floor of the tower and defeat the last boss. Moreover, if their characters die in the game, their bodies in real life also die.

Kirito has previous knowledge and experience. He feels confident enough to go alone and beat the game. As the game progresses, he befriends Asuna. He falls in love with her. They discover Kayaba’s avatar and destroy him, consequently freeing themselves and other players from the game. Some of the other players had not awakened yet. Others had died. Kirito logs in to investigate. He finds out that they had been murdered. He is attacked by one of the murderers of SAO.

The shojo romance manga was adapted in 2011. It tells the story of Sawako Kuronuma, a lady who had been alienated and stereotypically conceptualized as one who could see ghosts and curse people. When Kazehaya, her idol, begins talking to her, everyone suddenly starts relating and making friends with her. She thanks him for this. Gradually, love blossoms between the two.

The Japanese manga was adopted between October 2013 and March 2014. It details the story of Bandri Tada, a new student at a private law school in Tokyo. He has retrograde amnesia. He gets completely lost when on his way to the freshman orientation ceremony. He bumps into Mitsuo Yanagisawa, who is also equally lost, and they instantly hit off. They reach the ceremony on time. It was then that he met his childhood friend, Koko Kaga. They had promised each other during childhood that they would eventually marry each other. However, his relationship with Mitsuo blossomed. Meanwhile, Bandri meets Linda, a high school classmate whom he had confessed to just prior to his accident.

He develops feelings for Chi, regardless of its machine state. Together Hideki and Chi explore the relationship between machine and human.
