Carbuncle is the 7th esper available in the game. In order to get Carbuncle, you have to defeat him in Carbuncle Grove which to unlock you first first do the following:

  • Clear the Water Shrine dungeon
  • Talk to the man in front of the house in the middle of the Town of Amore here

  • Go to the cave north of Town of Amore for a cutscene and a battle here

  • Enter the cave and walk straight for a cutscene with Carbuncle

  • Talk to the man in front of the house in the middle of Town of Amore again here

  • Exit town, Carbuncle Grove will be open

Recommended Path

Reasoning: The Bar-Ra spells are already found in Materia form and Carbuncle would be mostly used as a healer Esper, so going after passives stat increases will net you more benefit.

Use any unholy attackers you may have. You should have no problem with him unless your party is low level.

Lore:

An esper which resides in Carbuncle Grove in western Olderion. It has soft, jade fur, and sparkling red gems on its cheeks. Though much smaller than other espers, the power it holds within its tiny body is more than deserving of its classification. The “ruby light” it unleashes from the gems on its cheeks creates an invisible barrier said to be able to reflect magic.
